Every five-letter word from the Goethe A1, A2 and B1 vocabulary lists, sorted by level, with the article for nouns and the English meaning for everything. Ä, Ö, Ü and ß count as one letter each, so Größe (size) is on the list and Straße (street) is not.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many five-letter German words are there?
Tens of thousands, if you count every conjugated and declined form: a Scrabble-style list has around 9,600 five-letter entries. This page shows only base forms that a learner is expected to know at A1, A2 or B1, plus a few everyday themed words, so it stays useful as a study list rather than a dictionary dump.
Do Ä, Ö, Ü and ß count as one letter?
Yes. Größe (size) is a five-letter word: G, R, Ö, ß, E. That is how German crosswords, Scrabble and German Wordle treat them. Only if you cannot type them do you write ae, oe, ue and ss instead, and then the word gets longer.
Can I use these words in German Wordle?
Yes. Every word on this page is a possible answer in our German Wordle. The game also accepts thousands of other real German words as guesses, including conjugated forms like GEHST, so you are not limited to this list while guessing.
Why do nouns show der, die or das?
The article is part of the word. Learning die Katze instead of just Katze means you will use the right article later, when it matters for cases and adjective endings. The article is not counted as part of the five letters.
