German Numbers 0 to 100 with Audio Pronunciation

Every German number from 0 to 100 on one page. Press the speaker on any card to hear it spoken by a native-sounding German voice, and check the accepted spelling variants next to each one. Two of them are worth knowing before you read the list: "zwei" (2) is often said as "zwo" on the phone or radio so it is not confused with "drei" (3), and ü can be written as ue when the keyboard has no umlaut. For how the number system works, why 21 is "einundzwanzig" (one-and-twenty), and the common mistakes, read the guide to counting in German.

    How to pronounce German numbers

German spelling is regular, so once you know a handful of sounds you can read every number on this page out loud. Play the clips above and listen for these:

    • ei sounds like "eye"

eins, zwei, drei: "eyns", "tsvy", "dry". Never "ay" as in English "eight".

    • z is "ts"

zwei is "tsvy", zehn is "tsayn", zwanzig starts with "tsvan". An English "z" sound does not exist at the start of German words.

    • v is "f", w is "v"

vier is "feer" and zwei has a "v" sound in the middle. Swap the two English letters and you are right.

    • ch has two sounds

After a, o, u it is the rough sound in Scottish "loch": acht, achtzig. After e, i, and at the end of -ig it is softer, like a whispered "h" with the tongue high: sechzehn, and zwanzig ends in "-tsich" in standard German.

    • sechs vs. sechzehn

sechs (6) is "zeks", but the "s" drops in sechzehn (16) and sechzig (60): "zech-tsayn", "zech-tsich". The same happens with sieben (7): siebzehn, siebzig.

    • eu sounds like "oy"

neun is "noyn", neunzehn is "noyn-tsayn".

    • ü and ö

fünf: say "ee" and round your lips as for "oo". zwölf: say "eh" with rounded lips. ue and oe are keyboard spellings of the same sounds.

    • ß is a sharp "s"

dreißig is "dry-sich". The ß only marks that the s is unvoiced; dreissig is the same word spelled without it.

Compound numbers are stressed on the first part: EIN-und-zwanzig, not ein-und-ZWAN-zig. The und in the middle is short and unstressed.

    German numbers FAQ

How do you pronounce German numbers from 1 to 100?
Every number on this page has an audio clip: press the speaker on a card to hear it. The sounds that matter most are ei as in "eye" (eins, zwei, drei), z as "ts" (zwei, zehn, zwanzig), v as "f" (vier), and the ch sound in acht and in the -zig ending. Numbers from 21 to 99 are spoken ones-first: einundzwanzig is "one-and-twenty", stressed on the first part.
Why do Germans say "zwo" instead of "zwei"?
On the phone, on the radio, and in announcements, zwei (2) and drei (3) sound alike. Saying zwo for 2 removes the confusion. It is understood everywhere and you will hear it for prices, phone numbers, and train platforms, but zwei is still the standard written form.
What is 0 called in German?
Zero is null in German, pronounced roughly "nool" with a short u. In phone numbers it is read digit by digit: null eins fünf is 015.
How do you say 21 in German?
Einundzwanzig, literally "one and twenty". German says the ones digit before the tens for every number from 21 to 99, so 32 is zweiunddreißig and 99 is neunundneunzig. Eins drops its final s inside compounds: ein-und-zwanzig, not eins-und-zwanzig.
