    About German flashcards

Build your German vocabulary faster with our free online flashcards. Each deck features interactive flip cards that show the German word on one side and the English translation on the other. Whether you are preparing for the Goethe A1, A2, or B1 exam, brushing up on common verbs and nouns, or exploring everyday topics like food, travel, and animals, there is a deck here for you.

Our German vocabulary flashcards include a built-in spaced repetition system that adapts to how well you know each word. Rate every card as hard, good, or easy, and the system schedules reviews so you spend more time on the words you struggle with. You can study all cards in a deck or focus only on the ones that are due for review.

Choose from 30+ flashcard decks organized into three groups: the Goethe curriculum (A1, A2, and B1 nouns, verbs, and adjectives), verb practice (the 50 most common verbs, separable verbs, and more), and thematic vocabulary covering real-life topics from restaurant dining to health and body. Every deck is free to use — no account required to start practicing.

    Flashcard FAQ

    Are these German flashcards free?
Yes. Every deck is free to study in your browser, with no download and no account required. Signing in is optional: it saves your review ratings so the decks can remember which cards are due.
    How does spaced repetition work?
After you flip a card, you rate it as hard, good, or easy. Cards you find hard come back sooner, and cards you know well appear less often, so your study time goes to the words that actually need review. When you are signed in, your ratings are saved and you can study only the cards that are due instead of the whole deck.
Are flashcards an effective way to learn German vocabulary?
Yes. Flashcards use active recall: you retrieve the word from memory before flipping the card, which is what makes it stick. Combined with spaced repetition, this is one of the best-researched ways to move vocabulary into long-term memory. For extra practice in context, pair the decks with our interactive German games.
Which decks should a beginner start with?
Start with the Goethe A1 decks (nouns, verbs, and adjectives) or the Most Common 50 Verbs and Most Common 50 German Nouns. They cover the highest-frequency words you need for everyday conversations, and you can move up to the A2 and B1 decks from there.
    What is on each card?
The front shows the German word; for nouns it includes the article (der, die, or das), color-coded so genders are easier to remember. Flip the card to see the English translation, and most cards also show an example sentence in German and English so you learn the word in context.
Is there a German flashcards app?
Yes. The companion mobile app includes the full versions of the larger decks, some of which are available as previews on the web. If you prefer a list format for reading or printing, browse the complete word lists behind each deck.
